Reading is at the heart of the curriculum at Holme Slack. We believe that reading is the key to success. We want to foster a love of reading in ALL children. We believe that children should read and enjoy books from as early as possible. Therefore we promote reading for pleasure as strongly as we teach the skill of reading.
We teach children to read through a daily systematic synthetic phonics programme at KS1.(Little Wandle)
Children then progress to daily spelling, punctuation and grammar sessions in KS2.
The teaching of reading is further developed by daily reading sessions.
Reading is promoted through a range of engaging resources taken from a variety of nationally recognised reading schemes.
We have a well stocked up to date library and we encourage all pupils to use this weekly.
Every class has a class story which they read straight after lunchtime as a way to relax before learning resumes.
The Reading Rainbow is a tool that we use throughout school to promote talk and discussion around a wide range of books, poems and even song lyrics. We use the rainbow to help us to use specific language when discussing texts and it prompts us to be organised in our thinking and precise when justifying our opinions.
We want all our children at Holme Slack to develop a rich vocabulary, to have preferences over what they read and be able to compare and debate different things that they read.
Using the Reading Rainbow, we explicitly teach the skills needed to write concise comprehension answers, giving them modelled and worked examples before allowing the children to apply their skills independently.
