Our Learning

Maths: We are a Teaching for Mastery school. Mastering maths means pupils of all ages acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths. Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.
English at our school follows Jane Considine’s The Write Stuff approach, placing high-quality texts at the centre of learning. Throughout the year, pupils explore a carefully selected range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, including classic and contemporary texts. These rich texts are used to develop vocabulary, sentence structure and an understanding of how language choices impact the reader. Through engaging units of work, children learn to craft writing for different purposes, such as storytelling, explanation and persuasion, while also developing a strong awareness of character, setting and structure. This varied approach builds confidence, enjoyment and strong writing skills across the curriculum.

Throughout the year, we undertake our My Happy Mind lessons every Tuesday morning where the children have their own journals for this. My Happy Mind helps to prepare today’s children for tomorrow’s world by building resilient, balanced and happy minds at home and school; equipping all children with the knowledge, skills and tools to thrive in the modern world.
