Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We are resilient, independent and kind! We learn to take turns, share and care for our friends. Every day, we grow in confidence, make choices and discover the importance of healthy habits for our bodies and minds!

Outdoor play in our mud kitchen!

Literacy

We love to listen, talk, read and write! From sharing stories and singing rhymes to mark-making and writing our own ideas, every day is an adventure in words. We explore letters, sounds and books to build a love for reading and storytelling!

Phonics in action!

Communication & Language

We love to chat, sing, listen and share! From telling stories and asking questions to giggling with friends, every conversation helps little voices grow. Listening, talking and exploring new words—every moment is a chance to communicate with confidence!

Communication and Language is at the heart of everything we do. Children develop these skills through play, hands-on experiences, stories, friendships and everyday interactions.

Understanding the World

We are curious about our community, culture and the world around us! Whether we're exploring nature, asking big questions, or discovering how things work, we are little scientists, adventurers and risk-takers—ready to uncover the wonders of our world!

Children develop an understanding of seasonal changes and different climates through everyday learning experiences.

Adventure Thursdays

Adventure Thursdays give children hands-on learning experiences, taking them out into the local community every Thursday to explore, build independence and develop a love of learning.

On Adventure Thursday, we spotted lots of special foods in Sainsbury’s ready for Eid — exploring our community and learning about celebrations!

Physical Development

We love to hop, skip, jump and run! From pouring and splashing to cutting and chopping, little hands and feet are always on the move. Balancing, climbing, catching and throwing—everyday play builds strength, coordination and confidence in exciting ways!

We visit Forest School weekly!

Maths

We love to count, sort, and explore shapes! From measuring and building to spotting patterns and solving puzzles, we use numbers and problem-solving skills in exciting ways every day.

Maths Mastery Learning!

Expressive Arts and Design

We love to paint, sing, dance and create. From building and designing to role-playing and making music, we use our imagination to explore, express and bring our ideas to life in exciting ways!

Expressive Arts and Design: We provide daily opportunities for children to explore and create in our very own atelier.

Breakfast & Snack

The children will be provided daily with a healthy breakfast. They can bring in £2.50 a week, which will be used to buy delicious, healthy snacks for the children. It will also contribute towards resources for the children to enhance the curriculum. Please can you also send children into school with a labelled water bottle. No juice or fizzy drink please.

Every day we share breakfast, promoting table manners, conversation and a sense of community.

P.E.

Reception will have two P.E. sessions a week. These will take place on Wednesday and Friday.

Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school and that it is clearly labelled! Earrings must be removed for P.E. sessions or your child will not be able to participate in P.E. due to health and safety.

Mathematics

How do we learn maths in Reception?

We do not expect your child to start school knowing and recognising all numbers. However, you can begin to expose your child to numbers in your everyday activities. For example, when you are out shopping, look out for numbers at the supermarket and discuss door numbers and bus numbers on your walks, bake together and weigh out ingredients.

We use a character based numeracy scheme Ten Town, designed specifically for the early years. The children will find out about each character and the number that they represent. They will enjoy listening to interactive stories, songs and rhymes to help with number formation and number recognition. Alongside Ten Town we use Numberblocks, which is a step by step learning journey grouped neatly into a five colour coded levels. Each level introduces ever greater numbers and a sequence of key topics and skills that help your child build natural number sense and a solid foundation of mathematical understanding.
